About the Organization
American University brings scholars, students, and practitioners together in the nation's capital to tackle real-world challenges. Chartered by Congress in 1893 and achieving Carnegie R1 research status in 2025, AU blends classroom rigor with internships, policy engagement, and global study. With 89% of undergrads completing at least one internship and 52% studying abroad, AU's schools—including the School of International Service (SIS), School of Public Affairs (SPA), Washington College of Law (WCL), Kogod School of Business, and School of Communication—focus on turning knowledge into impact. AU became the first urban research university to achieve carbon neutrality in 2018 and is a Top Producer of both Fulbright Students and Scholars.
