Final Five/Political Innovation
Open Primaries + Ranked-Choice Generals—Fixing Election Incentives
About the Organization
The Institute for Political Innovation (IPI) and the Final Five Elections campaign advance a simple, powerful election design: an open, single-ballot primary where every voter and candidate participates, followed by a ranked-choice general election among the top five finishers. The goal isn't to advantage a party—it's to change what winners are incented to do once elected: build broad coalitions, solve problems, and be accountable to November voters. Under today's rules, many races are effectively decided in low-turnout party primaries months before November. Final Five flips the incentives: more competition and choice between the primary and the general, and majority winners via instant runoffs—so elected leaders are rewarded for solving problems, not just winning a base primary.
Key Facts
Why I Support This Cause
Final Five is a practical upgrade to how we elect leaders: one open primary for everyone, then ranked-choice in November so the winner has a real majority mandate. It aligns incentives with results—more competition, more accountability, and better problem-solving. That's why I back IPI and the national Final Five effort.
"Final Five isn't designed to change who wins—it's designed to change what winners can do."
